Best Legal Answering Services and AI Receptionists Compared (2026)

By the Legal Touch AI team · Published · Updated

A legal answering service, also called a law firm or attorney answering service, is a company that answers a law firm's phone when the firm can't, using live receptionists, AI, or both. We compared 12 of them on who answers, what they charge, and who each fits best, with every price checked on the provider's own pricing page on Oct 29, 2026.

Illustration comparing three ways to answer a law firm's phone: live receptionists, a mix of people and AI, and an AI receptionist

Unanswered calls are common. In a secret-shopper study in Clio's 2019 Legal Trends Report, 56% of calls to law firms were answered by a person and 39% went to voicemail, and more than half of the firms didn't respond to those voicemails within 72 hours (Clio press release, Oct 21, 2019). This guide is written for owners of firms with 1 to 10 attorneys. It names the cases where a competitor is the better pick, including over our own service.

What is a legal answering service?

A legal answering service is an outside company that answers your firm's calls in your firm's name. It greets callers, asks your intake questions, takes messages, books consultations, and transfers urgent calls to you. Some use live receptionists, some use AI, and some use both. None should give legal advice.

How is an AI receptionist different from a live answering service?

An AI receptionist is software that holds a natural phone conversation, follows a script your firm approves, and answers every call at once, at any hour. A live answering service uses trained people working in shifts. People handle unusual calls with more judgment. AI is usually cheaper per call and asks every question the same way every time. Our guide to AI receptionists for law firms covers how AI calls work in detail.

What do law firms use an answering service for?

  • After-hours, weekend, and lunch coverage
  • New-caller intake with your screening questions
  • Live transfers of urgent or high-value callers
  • Booking consultations on your calendar
  • Overflow when your front desk is on another line

How do the 12 legal answering services compare?

The biggest differences are who answers, whether the service is built only for law firms, and how it bills. Live services such as Ruby, PATLive, and LEX Reception bill by the minute. Smith.ai bills by the call. Several AI services charge a flat monthly fee. Three of the 12 don't publish prices.

Chart grouping the 12 legal answering services by who answers the phone: live receptionists, people and AI, or AI only

Which legal answering service is best for a small law firm?

The best legal answering service depends on who you want answering and how many calls you get. For a person on every call, look at Answering Legal, LEX Reception, Alert Communications, Ruby, or PATLive. For a mix of people and AI, look at Smith.ai or Abby Connect. For AI only, compare ClaireAI, Intake Gateway, Lexidesk, and Legal Touch AI.

Live receptionists built for law firms

Answering Legal focuses on law firms and says it has no setup fees and no long-term contracts, but it shows prices only after you submit a contact form. LEX Reception offers 24/7 live legal reception with bilingual agents, client intake, and legal software integrations, and it bills in whole minutes, rounded up. Alert Communications serves law firms only and lists mass tort, intake, and retainer services, which suits high-volume personal injury practices.

Live receptionists for any business

Ruby is a well-known live service with a legal page, no setup fees, and Spanish and bilingual answering available. It is the most expensive per minute in our sample. PATLive uses only live, U.S.-based receptionists, has no contracts, offers bilingual answering at no extra charge, and has the lowest published live price at our sample volume. Nexa lists plans by voice minutes but no prices.

People and AI together

Smith.ai sells an AI receptionist billed per call, with live agents as backup, plus a separate live receptionist service. It lists a Clio integration. Add-ons such as booking ($1.50 a call) and a Spanish line ($1.00 a call) are priced per call. Abby Connect lets you route each call to a person or AI on one plan, and AI minutes count as half.

AI built for law firms

ClaireAI publishes the lowest per-minute price here and includes practice-area playbooks. Intake Gateway charges one flat fee for personal injury, workers' comp, criminal defense, and family law firms. Lexidesk quotes a flat fee after a call and adds retainer signing and CRM sync. Legal Touch AI offers a self-setup plan or one we build, run, and tune for you.

How much does a legal answering service cost?

On Oct 29, 2026, published plans for a small firm ran from a free 25-call AI plan at Smith.ai to $1,725 a month for 500 live minutes at Ruby. At our sample volume of 60 calls a month, AI plans cost $105 to $329 and live plans $349 to $720.

Bar chart of monthly cost at 60 calls a month for 10 plans, from $105 to $720, based on public prices checked Oct 29, 2026

First-year total is the monthly cost times 12, plus published setup, without annual discounts, add-ons, or taxes. Answering Legal, Nexa, and Lexidesk are left out because they don't publish prices. Your real cost depends on your call length, spam calls, and add-ons, so price your own volume. A full cost breakdown is coming in our legal answering service cost guide.

Where does Legal Touch AI land?

We left our own plans out of this sample so the comparison stays about the market. Legal Touch AI starts at $149 a month for self-setup; see Legal Touch AI plans and pricing.

Should a law firm choose a live answering service or an AI receptionist?

Choose a live answering service if many callers are in crisis, want a human voice, or need judgment calls your script can't cover. Choose an AI receptionist if most missed calls come after hours or during court, your screening questions repeat, and you want a predictable monthly price. A hybrid service gives you both.

Decision flow for choosing a legal answering service: a person on every call, a mix of people and AI, AI you set up yourself, or AI set up for you

When is another service a better pick than Legal Touch AI?

  • You want a person on every call. Choose Answering Legal, LEX Reception, Alert Communications, Ruby, or PATLive.
  • You want the lowest price at very low volume. Smith.ai's free plan or ClaireAI's $129 plan can cost less than any monthly plan with setup work done for you.
  • You need people and AI on one bill. Abby Connect or Smith.ai fit better.
  • You need Spanish or case software sync on day one at a published price. We quote those separately.
  • You run high-volume mass tort intake. Alert Communications is built for that.

When does Legal Touch AI fit?

Legal Touch AI fits a firm of 1 to 10 attorneys that wants AI answering without doing the setup. We write the greeting, AI disclosure, recording notice, and screening questions with you, test calls with you before launch, and change the script on request, usually within 1 business day. See how a call works, step by step.

What should you ask a legal answering service before you sign?

Ask who answers your calls, what you are billed for, what happens past your plan, whether it transfers callers live and books on your calendar, how fast you get the summary, how long the contract runs, and who can see your recordings. Get the answers in writing before you sign anything.

Checklist of eight questions to ask a legal answering service before you sign
  1. Who answers: a person, AI, or both, and where are they based?
  2. What is the billing unit: minutes, calls, or a flat fee?
  3. What does each minute or call cost past my plan?
  4. Do spam calls and transfers count against my plan?
  5. Can it transfer callers to me live and book on my calendar?
  6. How fast do I get the summary, recording, and transcript?
  7. How long is the contract, and how much notice do I give to cancel?
  8. Who can see my recordings, and how long are they kept?

The last question matters because supervision stays with you. ABA Model Rule 5.3 says lawyers with managerial authority must make reasonable efforts to ensure that a nonlawyer retained by the firm acts in a way compatible with the lawyer's professional obligations. This is general information, not legal advice.

How do you switch legal answering services without missing calls?

Set up and test the new service before you move a single call. Write down your current script, test the new service on a private line, then change call forwarding during a quiet hour. Keep the old account active until the new one has handled a full week of calls.

  1. Export your current script, transfer list, and urgent-call rules.
  2. Check the cancellation notice in your current agreement.
  3. Set up the new service with your greeting, screening questions, and calendar.
  4. Test calls on a private line, including after hours and a transfer.
  5. Forward your number to the new service during a quiet hour.
  6. Review the first week of summaries and fix the script.
  7. Cancel the old service once the new one is working.

Why we wrote this comparison

Legal Touch AI comes from the team behind Legal Touch. We set it up on our own phone lines first, screening callers and booking callbacks, and now we set it up for small law firms. We sell one of the services in this table, so we listed every price we could verify and said where others fit better.

Frequently asked questions

Do legal answering services give legal advice?

No. A legal answering service collects facts, takes messages, transfers calls, and books consultations. Legal judgment stays with your attorneys. Legal Touch AI never gives legal advice, never predicts how a case will turn out, and never quotes fees unless your firm approves the exact wording.

Is a legal answering service cheaper than hiring a receptionist?

Often, for small call volumes. At 60 calls a month, published plans we checked on Oct 29, 2026 cost $105 to $720 a month. A full-time receptionist covers about 40 of the 168 hours in a week, while most of these services answer around the clock.

Do legal answering services answer calls in Spanish?

Many do. On their own sites, LEX Reception lists bilingual agents, PATLive offers bilingual answering at no extra charge, Abby Connect and Ruby offer Spanish, and Smith.ai prices a dedicated Spanish line at $1.00 a call. Legal Touch AI quotes Spanish separately on the demo call.

Can I try a legal answering service before I commit?

Several offer a trial. PATLive has a 14-day free trial, Abby Connect includes a free trial, Smith.ai has a free 25-call plan, and Intake Gateway's first month is free. Legal Touch AI offers a 15-minute demo and a 60-day money-back guarantee (minus costs, max $750).

Do I have to change my phone number to use an answering service?

Not with Legal Touch AI. You keep your number and your phone company, and you forward calls to us. You can switch forwarding off at any time, which sends calls straight back to your office. Ask any other provider whether it forwards your number or assigns a new one.

Legal Touch AI is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. This article is general information. Using Legal Touch AI does not create an attorney-client relationship.
