Legal Answering Service Cost: AI vs Live Receptionist Pricing in 2026
Legal answering service cost is the monthly price a law firm pays an outside company to answer its phone, set by who answers (people or AI) and how the service bills. We checked 12 providers' own pricing pages on Oct 29, 2026, and priced 11 plans from 9 of them at 30, 60, and 120 calls a month.

Price matters, but so does the cost of not answering. In a secret-shopper study in Clio's 2019 Legal Trends Report, 39% of calls to law firms went to voicemail, and 79% of surveyed consumers said they expected a response within 24 hours (Clio press release, Oct 21, 2019). This guide is for owners of firms with 1 to 10 attorneys. We sell one of the services below, so we show every published price we could verify and say plainly when another service costs less.
How much does a legal answering service cost?
A legal answering service costs about $15 to $1,725 a month at 30 to 120 calls, based on public prices we checked on Oct 29, 2026. AI receptionists ran $15 to $599 a month at those volumes. Live receptionist services ran $189 to $1,725. Some services add a setup fee on top, from $75 to amounts quoted only on request.
The range is wide because three things set the price:
- Who answers. People cost more per minute than AI.
- The billing unit. Minutes, calls, or one flat fee.
- Your volume. How many calls you get and how long they last.

How do legal answering services bill?
Legal answering services bill in one of three ways. Per-minute plans charge for the time someone or something is on your calls. Per-call plans charge a set price for each answered call, whatever its length. Flat plans charge one monthly fee for every answered call, usually with a fair-use guide. Most add overage past the plan.
- Per minute. A per-minute plan is a monthly bundle of talk time, with a rate for each extra minute. Ruby, PATLive, LEX Reception, Alert Communications, ClaireAI, and Legal Touch AI bill this way. LEX rounds every call up to the next whole minute, so a 2 minute 28 second call counts as 3 minutes, per its own FAQ.
- Per call. A per-call plan includes a set number of calls a month and charges for each call past it. Smith.ai bills its AI and live plans this way.
- Abby Minutes. Abby Connect counts usage in Abby Minutes, where one AI minute counts as half a human minute.
- Flat. A flat plan is one monthly price for every answered call. Intake Gateway charges $149 a month, with a fair-use guide of up to 100 answered calls that its page says is not a cap.
Short calls favor per-minute plans. Long intake calls favor per-call or flat plans.
What does each service cost at 30, 60, and 120 calls a month?
At 60 calls a month, the cheapest published plan we found was Smith.ai's AI Receptionist at $105, and the most expensive was Ruby's live service at $720. At 120 calls, flat and large-bundle AI plans stayed between $129 and $149, while live plans ran from $585 to $1,725 a month.
Monthly cost at three call volumes (our compiled table)
To compare per-minute, per-call, and flat plans in one unit, we priced a sample firm whose calls average 3 minutes, at 30, 60, and 120 calls a month (90, 180, and 360 minutes). For each service we used the cheapest published plan, plus published overage where that was cheaper. Where a plan's overage rate isn't published, we moved up to the next plan instead of guessing.
| Service and plan type | Who answers | 30 calls | 60 calls | 120 calls | Published setup fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist, per call | AI, live backup | $15 | $105 | $262.50 | $0 |
| ClaireAI, per minute | AI | $129 | $129 | $129 | $0 |
| Intake Gateway, flat | AI | $149 | $149 | $149 (above its 100-call fair-use guide) | $0 |
| Abby Connect, all AI | AI | $164 | $329 | $599 | $0 |
| PATLive, per minute | People | $189 | $349 | $592.40 | $0, plus taxes and fees |
| LEX Reception, per minute | People | $425 | $450 | $585 | $75 on the 150-minute plan only |
| Alert Communications Tier 2, with intake | People | $590 | $590 | $590 plus overage (rate not published) | May apply, per its page |
| Abby Connect, all human | People | $329 | $599 | $1,380 | $0 |
| Smith.ai live receptionists, per call | People | $300 | $645 | $1,125 | $0 |
| Ruby, per minute | People | $395 | $720 | $1,725 | $0 |

How we got the numbers: Smith.ai AI at 60 calls is the free plan's 25 calls plus 35 calls at $3. At 120 calls it is the Pro plan's 75 calls for $150 plus 45 calls at $2.50. Smith.ai live at 60 calls is 30 calls for $300 plus 30 at $11.50. PATLive at 120 calls is 300 minutes for $479 plus 60 minutes at $1.89. LEX at 120 calls is 300 minutes for $450 plus 60 minutes at $2.25. Abby and Ruby don't publish overage in dollars on their pricing pages, so we used the next plan up.
Answering Legal, Nexa, and Lexidesk are left out because they don't publish prices. Answering Legal shows its prices only after a contact form, and Lexidesk quotes a flat monthly fee after a fit assessment call. Prices exclude taxes, add-ons, and annual discounts. How much does an AI receptionist cost for a law firm?
An AI receptionist for a law firm costs $0 to about $600 a month at small-firm volumes, based on public prices we checked on Oct 29, 2026. Plans you set up yourself start free or near $130 to $150. Plans where the provider builds, runs, and tunes the AI cost more, and some add a setup fee.
An AI receptionist is software that answers your phone in a natural voice, asks your screening questions, and sends you a summary of each call. Price tracks how much of the work you do yourself:
- Set it up yourself. Smith.ai's free plan covers 25 calls ($3 a call after), and its Pro plan is $150 for 75 calls. ClaireAI starts at $129 for 400 minutes, with $0.35 a minute after. Intake Gateway is $149 flat, for four practice areas only.
- Mixed people and AI. Abby Connect plans run from $164 to $1,380 a month, and AI minutes count as half.
- Built and run for you. Smith.ai's Enterprise plan, with full-service setup, starts at $500 for 300 calls. Lexidesk doesn't publish a price.
Our guide to AI receptionists for law firms explains what the AI does on each call and how to choose one.
Is an answering service cheaper than hiring a receptionist?
Yes, for most small firms. The median receptionist wage was $18.27 an hour in May 2025, per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, or about $3,168 a month for full-time pay before taxes and benefits. Every published plan in our table costs less than that, even at 120 calls a month.

The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook puts median annual pay for receptionists at $38,010. We divided by 12 to get about $3,168 a month. That figure is wages only. Payroll taxes, benefits, paid time off, and a desk add to it.
Coverage differs too. A full-time receptionist covers about 40 of the 168 hours in a week. Most services in our table answer around the clock. A person in your office also greets visitors, files, and handles mail, which no answering service does. Many firms keep their front desk and use a service for after hours, lunch, and overflow.
What hidden fees raise the cost of an answering service?
The biggest hidden costs are overage past your plan, per-call add-ons, setup fees, minute rounding, and taxes. On the pages we checked, overage ran from $0.35 a minute for AI to $11.50 a call for live receptionists. Add-ons such as booking, Spanish, and recordings can cost extra on each call.

- Overage. LEX charges $2.25 to $2.75 a minute past the plan. Smith.ai live charges $8.50 to $11.50 a call past the plan.
- Per-call add-ons. On Smith.ai's live plans, booking an appointment is $1.50 a call, a dedicated Spanish line is $1.00, conflict checks are $0.50, and call recording and transcription is $0.25.
- Setup fees. LEX charges $75 on its 150-minute plan. Alert Communications says setup fees may apply, and Nexa's FAQ mentions a setup fee without a published amount.
- Minute rounding. LEX bills in whole minutes, rounded up. Ask every per-minute service how it counts.
- Taxes and fees. PATLive prices are plus government taxes and fees.
- Cancellation notice. Smith.ai's AI plans need 30 days' notice to cancel.
Some services cut costs too. PATLive charges nothing extra for nights, weekends, or bilingual calls. Smith.ai's live plans don't charge for spam calls when caller ID passes. Smith.ai offers 10% off live plans paid for 12 months, and ClaireAI's Solo plan drops to $103 a month billed annually.
How do you estimate your firm's monthly answering service cost?
Count last month's calls, multiply by your average call length, and price that volume on each provider's own page. Add overage, add-ons, and setup, then compare first-year totals. Do this with your own phone records, not a sample volume, because call length and spam drive the bill.
- Pull last month's call log from your phone company or phone system.
- Count the calls you want answered, and leave out known spam.
- Multiply the call count by your average call length to get minutes.
- Price that volume on each provider's own pricing page.
- Add overage, per-call add-ons, setup fees, and taxes.
- Compare first-year totals, not just the monthly price.
- Request a written quote from any service that doesn't publish prices.
Where does Legal Touch AI fit on price?
We kept our own plans out of the tables above so they stay about the market. Legal Touch AI starts at $149 a month if you set it up yourself, the same as the lowest flat AI price we found. See Legal Touch AI plans and pricing, or read how a call works, step by step.
When is another service the better pick?
- You want a person on every call. PATLive, LEX Reception, or Ruby are built for that.
- You get very few calls. Smith.ai's free 25-call plan costs less than any monthly plan.
- You want people and AI on one bill. Abby Connect or Smith.ai fit better.
- You need Spanish or case software sync at a published price on day one. We quote those separately.
Why we compiled these prices
We're the Legal Touch AI team. Legal Touch has run since 2021, and Legal Touch AI is now part of it. We set it up on our own phone lines first, screening callers and booking callbacks, before offering it to small law firms. We built this table because a headline price doesn't show what a firm pays at its own call volume, and we wanted owners to see the whole market in one place.

Frequently asked questions
Do legal answering services charge setup fees?
Some do. On pages we checked Oct 29, 2026, Ruby, Abby Connect, Smith.ai, PATLive, Intake Gateway, and Answering Legal list no setup fee. LEX Reception charges $75 on its smallest plan, Alert Communications says setup fees may apply, and Nexa mentions a setup fee without an amount.
Do spam calls count against an answering service plan?
It depends on the service, so ask before you sign. Smith.ai's live plans don't charge for spam when caller ID passes. Its AI plans filter known spammers and let you remove up to 10% of calls each cycle. LEX Reception doesn't charge for the first 30 interactions under 30 seconds each billing cycle.
Is there a free legal answering service?
Not for full-time use, but there are free starts. Smith.ai's AI Receptionist has a free plan for 25 calls a month, then $3 a call. PATLive has a 14-day free trial, Abby Connect has a free trial on every plan, and ClaireAI and Intake Gateway each offer a free first 30 days with a card on file.
Do answering services charge more for nights, weekends, or Spanish?
Many don't charge more for nights and weekends. PATLive includes nights, weekends, and bilingual calls at no extra fee, and Smith.ai prices a 2 am call the same as a 2 pm call. Smith.ai charges $1.00 a call for a dedicated Spanish line. Legal Touch AI quotes Spanish separately.
How many minutes a month does a small law firm need?
Count your calls and multiply by their average length. Our sample firm with 60 three-minute calls uses 180 minutes a month. Check whether your provider rounds each call up to a full minute, since that adds time on every call.
