Smith.ai Alternative for Small Law Firms: An Honest Comparison

By · Published · Updated

A Smith.ai alternative is any phone answering service a law firm uses in place of Smith.ai, whether that is an AI receptionist, live receptionists, or a mix of both. We checked Smith.ai's three pricing pages and the pricing pages of 10 other providers, plus our own, on Oct 30, 2026, and compared them for firms with 1 to 10 attorneys.

Illustration comparing Smith.ai with alternatives for small law firms: AI receptionists, live receptionists, and mixed services, with prices checked Oct 30, 2026

Why it matters: in a secret-shopper study in Clio's 2019 Legal Trends Report, 39% of calls to law firms went to voicemail, and 79% of surveyed consumers said they expected a response within 24 hours (Clio press release, Oct 21, 2019). We sell one of the services below. So we show every published price we could verify, and we say plainly when Smith.ai or another service is the better pick.

What is the best Smith.ai alternative for a small law firm?

The best Smith.ai alternative depends on who you want answering. For people on every call, look at PATLive, LEX Reception, or Ruby. For low-cost AI you set up yourself, try ClaireAI or Intake Gateway. For people and AI on one plan, try Abby Connect. For AI set up and run for you, pick a managed service.

Pick by the job you need done, not by brand:

  • A person on every call. PATLive, LEX Reception, Ruby, Alert Communications, Answering Legal, or Smith.ai's live plans.
  • The lowest monthly price. Smith.ai's free AI plan, ClaireAI, or Intake Gateway, if you will write and tune the script yourself.
  • People and AI on one bill. Abby Connect, or Smith.ai's Hybrid plans.
  • AI that someone else builds and tunes. Smith.ai Enterprise or Legal Touch AI.

Our comparison of legal answering services and AI receptionists covers each provider in more detail.

How does Smith.ai pricing work?

Smith.ai bills by the call, not the minute, and sells three kinds of answering. AI-first plans start free for 25 calls, then $3 a call. Hybrid plans, where AI takes routine calls and people take the important ones, start around $2.50 a call. Human-first plans start at $300 for 30 calls.

Smith.ai's three ways to answer calls, AI-first, Hybrid, and Human-first, with the starting price of each from Smith.ai's own pricing pages on Oct 30, 2026

Per-call billing is a price for each answered call, whatever its length. Here is what Smith.ai's own pages showed on Oct 30, 2026:

Smith.ai plan Who answers Price Included calls Extra call
AI Free AI, with live agent backup $0 25 $3.00
AI Pro AI, with live agent backup $150, $270, or $500 75, 150, or 300 $2.50, $2.30, or $2.17
AI Enterprise AI, full-service setup $500 or $800 300 or 500 $2.17 or $2.10
Hybrid AI plus live agents From about $2.50 a call Set by volume Not published
Human-first Starter Live receptionists $300 30 $11.50
Human-first Basic Live receptionists $810 90 $10.50
Human-first Pro Live receptionists $2,100 300 $8.50

A few terms matter as much as the price:

  • Add-ons on live plans. Booking is $1.50 a call, a dedicated Spanish line $1.00, conflict checks $0.50, and recording with transcripts $0.25.
  • Spam. Live plans don't charge for spam when caller ID passes. AI plans filter known spammers and let you remove up to 10% of calls each cycle.
  • Notice. AI and Hybrid plans need 30 days' notice to cancel. Live plans bill through the end of the current cycle.
  • Reasonable use. Extended intake on live plans must average 120 seconds or less, or extra fees may apply.

Smith.ai's live plans carry a 30-day money-back guarantee, refunding up to $1,000 (overage excluded), and 10% off for paying 12 months.

Smith.ai vs Ruby: which costs less?

Smith.ai's live receptionists cost less than Ruby for most small firms. Ruby bills per minute and rounds every call up to the next minute, so it only wins when calls are very short. In our check, Ruby cost less only when each call billed 1 minute. At 2 minutes or more, Smith.ai cost less.

Grid comparing Smith.ai live receptionists and Ruby at 30, 60 and 120 calls a month and call lengths of 1, 2, 3 and 5 billed minutes, showing which costs less in each case

Ruby is a live receptionist service that sells monthly bundles of receptionist minutes: $250 for 50, $395 for 100, $720 for 200, and $1,725 for 500. Its pricing page lists no setup fee and no overage rate, so where a firm runs past a bundle we moved it up to the next plan.

Smith.ai live vs Ruby: monthly cost by call length (our compiled table)

Calls a month Billed minutes per call Smith.ai live Ruby Lower cost
30 1 $300 $250 Ruby
30 2 or 3 $300 $395 Smith.ai
30 5 $300 $720 Smith.ai
60 1 $645 $395 Ruby
60 2 or 3 $645 $720 Smith.ai
60 5 $645 $1,725 Smith.ai
120 1 $1,125 $720 Ruby
120 2 or 3 $1,125 $1,725 Smith.ai
120 5 $1,125 Over 500 minutes, not published Smith.ai

Prices from smith.ai/pricing/receptionists and ruby.com/pricing, checked Oct 30, 2026. Smith.ai figures use the cheapest plan plus published overage ($300 + 30 x $11.50 = $645; $810 + 30 x $10.50 = $1,125). Smith.ai add-ons not included.

Ruby's minutes run longer than talk time. Its terms say billing includes hold time and the time a receptionist spends finishing notes after the caller hangs up. Smith.ai's add-ons push the other way: booking every call adds $1.50 each.

What is a good Ruby receptionist alternative?

A good Ruby receptionist alternative keeps a live person on the phone at a lower price. At 60 three-minute calls a month, Ruby's plan costs $720. PATLive costs $349, LEX Reception $450, Abby Connect $599, and Smith.ai's live plan $645, based on each provider's own pricing page on Oct 30, 2026.

  • PATLive charges nothing extra for nights, weekends, or bilingual calls, and offers a 14-day free trial. Prices are plus taxes and fees.
  • LEX Reception is built for law firms. It rounds each call up to a whole minute, and its 150-minute plan has a $75 setup fee.
  • Abby Connect lets you choose people or AI and counts an AI minute as half.
  • Smith.ai is cheaper than Ruby when intake calls run long, because it bills per call.

Ruby does add optional AI tools to every plan at no extra cost, but a person still answers.

What are the best Smith.ai alternatives, by price?

At 60 three-minute calls a month, published prices for Smith.ai alternatives ran from $129 to $720 on Oct 30, 2026. ClaireAI and Intake Gateway cost the least. Smith.ai's own AI plan, at $105, still beat every alternative we priced. Live services cost $349 to $720.

Smith.ai alternatives compared at 60 three-minute calls a month (our compiled table)

Smith.ai live receptionists People Per call $300 for 30 calls $645 None
Ruby People Per minute $250 for 50 minutes $720 None listed

Sixty calls of 3 minutes is 180 minutes. We used the cheapest published plan plus published overage where cheaper; where overage isn't published (Ruby, Abby Connect, Alert), we moved up a plan instead of guessing. Taxes and add-ons are excluded. Answering Legal, Nexa, and Lexidesk don't publish prices, so they are left out.

When is Smith.ai the better pick?

Smith.ai is the better pick when you want the lowest AI price, a live agent behind the AI, or people and AI from one company. Its free plan covers 25 calls a month, it lists a Clio integration, and you can move between AI, Hybrid, and live plans without switching providers.

Choose Smith.ai over an alternative if:

  • You get few calls. Under 25 calls a month, its AI plan costs nothing.
  • You want a person as backup. Its AI can hand a caller to a live, North America-based receptionist at any hour.
  • Your intake calls run long. Per-call billing doesn't grow with call length, within its reasonable-use limits.
  • You want to switch modes later. One provider covers AI-first, Hybrid, and Human-first.

Why do law firms look for a Smith.ai alternative?

Law firms look for a Smith.ai alternative mostly over fit, not quality. Common reasons are per-call add-ons on live plans, the 30-day notice on AI plans, wanting a person on every call at a lower price, or wanting someone else to build and tune the AI instead of doing it in-house.

  • Add-ons add up. On live plans, booking, Spanish, conflict checks, and recordings are each priced per call.
  • Do-it-yourself setup. The Free and Pro AI plans are set up by your team. Full-service setup and ongoing tuning come with Enterprise, from $500 a month.
  • Notice periods. AI and Hybrid plans need 30 days' notice to cancel.
  • Narrow fit. Some firms want a service that answers only for one practice area or only for law firms.

None of these make Smith.ai a poor choice. They are reasons to price your own call pattern before you sign.

How do you switch from Smith.ai to another answering service?

To switch from Smith.ai, pull your call data, price your volume elsewhere, and test the new service before you move your number. Then give notice and watch the first two weeks of calls. Planned this way, callers never reach a dead line, and you don't pay two services longer than needed.

Checklist of seven steps to switch from Smith.ai to another legal answering service, from exporting call history to reviewing the first two weeks of calls
  1. Save your call history, intake answers, and recordings from your Smith.ai account.
  2. Count your monthly calls and average call length from your phone records.
  3. Price that volume on each new provider's own pricing page.
  4. Write down your current script, transfer rules, and booking rules.
  5. Test the new service on a private line before any real caller reaches it.
  6. Forward your number to the new service, then give Smith.ai notice in writing.
  7. Review every call from the first two weeks and fix gaps in the script.

AI and Hybrid plans need 30 days' notice, so send it early. If you ported your number to Smith.ai, ask the new provider how a port back works before you cancel.

How does Legal Touch AI compare with Smith.ai?

At 60 calls a month, Smith.ai AI costs $105, which beats every flat plan we priced, ours included. Legal Touch AI starts at $149 a month if you set it up yourself, or we can set up, run, and tune the AI for you, with live transfers to your phone.

Smith.ai Enterprise, from $500 for 300 calls with full-service setup, is the closest Smith.ai plan, and it also costs less than ours. Here is when each fits:

  • Choose Smith.ai if you want a live agent behind the AI, the lowest price, or a free start.
  • Choose Legal Touch AI if you want your greeting, screening questions, and calendar built with you, live transfers to you during office hours with a text first, script changes usually within 1 business day, and a monthly check-in call.

Legal Touch AI is month to month and comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee (minus costs, max $750). See Legal Touch AI plans and pricing, and our guide to AI receptionists for law firms explains what the AI does on each call.

Why we wrote this comparison

The Legal Touch AI team has run Legal Touch since 2021. We set up Legal Touch AI on our own phone lines first, screening callers and booking callbacks, before offering it to small law firms. We wrote this because "alternative" pages often hide where the brand they compare against wins, and owners deserve to see that before they choose.

Frequently asked questions

Is Smith.ai an AI or a live answering service?

Both. Smith.ai sells AI-first plans, where AI answers and can hand a caller to a live receptionist, Hybrid plans that send chosen calls to people, and Human-first plans, where live receptionists answer every call. All three bill per call. Prices on its pricing pages start free, about $2.50 a call, and $300 a month.

Is there a free Smith.ai alternative?

Not for full-time use, but several have free starts. PATLive has a 14-day free trial, Abby Connect offers a free trial on every plan, Intake Gateway gives a free first month with a card on file, and ClaireAI offers a 30-day trial after a demo. Smith.ai itself has a free plan for 25 calls a month.

Does Ruby use AI to answer calls?

No. Ruby's receptionists are live people. Its pricing page says optional AI enhancements, such as AI-powered transcripts, come with every plan at no extra cost, but a person still answers each call. For an AI receptionist, look at Smith.ai's AI plans, ClaireAI, Intake Gateway, Abby Connect's AI option, or Legal Touch AI.

How much notice does Smith.ai need to cancel?

Smith.ai's AI and Hybrid plans need 30 days' notice to cancel, per its pricing pages on Oct 30, 2026. Its live receptionist plans are month to month and bill through the end of the current billing cycle. Ruby's terms describe a 30-day contract that renews automatically unless you cancel or change it.

Can I keep my phone number if I switch answering services?

Usually, yes. Most services, Legal Touch AI included, answer through call forwarding, so your number stays with your phone company. Smith.ai's live plans also let you port your number to them at no charge. If you ported it, ask your new provider how to move it before you cancel Smith.ai.
