Abby Connect Alternative for Small Law Firms: Prices Compared

By · Published · Updated

An Abby Connect alternative is any phone answering service a law firm uses in place of Abby Connect, whether that is a live receptionist service, an AI receptionist, or another mix of people and AI. We checked Abby Connect's pricing page, legal page, and terms, plus the pricing pages of 8 other services, on Nov 2, 2026, and compared them for firms with 1 to 10 attorneys.

Why it matters: in a secret-shopper study in Clio's 2019 Legal Trends Report, 39% of calls to law firms went to voicemail, and 79% of surveyed consumers said they expected a response within 24 hours (Clio press release, Oct 21, 2019). Abby Connect is one well-known way to fix that. We sell another. So we show every published price we could verify, and we say plainly when Abby Connect is the better pick.

What is the best Abby Connect alternative for a small law firm?

The best Abby Connect alternative depends on who you want answering and how you want to be billed. For a person on every call for less, look at PATLive or LEX Reception. For per-call billing, try Smith.ai. For low-cost AI you set up yourself, try ClaireAI. For AI set up and tuned for you, pick a managed service.

Pick by the job you need done, not by brand:

  • A person on every call, for less. PATLive or LEX Reception. Ruby and Smith.ai's live plans cost more than Abby at 60 calls a month.
  • Per-call billing instead of minutes. Smith.ai's live and AI plans charge per call, so a long intake call doesn't raise the bill.
  • The lowest monthly price. Smith.ai's AI plan, ClaireAI, or Intake Gateway, if you will write and tune the script yourself.
  • AI that someone else builds and tunes. Legal Touch AI's done-for-you plans or Smith.ai's Enterprise AI plan.

How much does Abby Connect cost in 2026?

Abby Connect costs $164 a month for 50 Abby Minutes, $329 for 100, $599 for 200, and $1,380 for 500, per its pricing page on Nov 2, 2026. Larger Enterprise plans are quoted. Every plan is month to month, with no setup fee, a free trial, and English and Spanish answering included.

Abby Connect is a virtual receptionist service, with receptionists in its Las Vegas office, that sells one subscription you can use three ways: human receptionists, its AI Receptionist, or a mix of both. Here is what Abby's own pages showed on Nov 2, 2026:

Abby plan Monthly price Abby Minutes Minutes if all people Minutes if all AI Price per human minute Price per AI minute Overage per Abby Minute
Starter $164 50 50 100 $3.28 $1.64 $3.29
Essential $329 100 100 200 $3.29 $1.65 $3.29
Professional $599 200 200 400 $3.00 $1.50 $2.99
Growth $1,380 500 500 1,000 $2.76 $1.38 $2.76

Plan prices and minutes from abby.com/pricing. Overage rates from Abby's Terms and Conditions (last updated Aug 19, 2026). Per-minute prices are our math: plan price divided by minutes. All checked Nov 2, 2026.

Abby's pricing page lists what every plan includes: a dedicated receptionist team for human answering, the AbbyGO app and my.abby.com portal, self-serve call controls, onboarding done for you, encrypted call recordings, custom answering hours with a 24/7 option and no weekend upcharge, call blocking, and more than 1,000 integrations.

How do Abby Minutes work for human and AI calls?

An Abby Minute is Abby Connect's billing unit. One minute with a human receptionist uses one Abby Minute, and one minute with the AI Receptionist uses half. If the AI answers and then hands the call to a person, each part bills at its own rate. Abby's terms count ring, talk, and transfer time, but not hold time.

Abby's terms explain the rounding in two steps. Ring time, talk time, and transfer time are each rounded up to the next second, and the total is rounded up to the next 30 seconds. Abby's human receptionist page notes that it bills in 30-second increments rather than rounding every call up to a full minute, which helps firms with many short calls.

Our example shows the math. A call with 9.1 seconds of ring time and 2 minutes 5.4 seconds of talk measures 136 seconds and bills as 2.5 minutes. That is 2.5 Abby Minutes with a person or 1.25 with the AI. Sixty such calls use 150 Abby Minutes with people, $493 a month, or 75 with AI, $246.25.

Example of how Abby Connect measures one call: 10 seconds of ring time plus 126 seconds of talk is 136 seconds, rounded up to 2.5 minutes, which uses 2.5 Abby Minutes with a person or 1.25 with the AI

What does Abby Connect charge for overage minutes?

Abby Connect bills overage at your plan's Abby Minute rate. Its terms list $3.29 per Abby Minute on Starter and Essential, $2.99 on Professional, and $2.76 on Growth, billed at the end of each month. You can move up a plan at any time, so going over is a math question, not a penalty.

Because overage costs about the same as included minutes, a smaller plan plus overage is often the cheaper choice. Our break-even math on Abby's published rates:

  • Starter or Essential. Starter plus overage costs $328.50 at 100 Abby Minutes, one dollar under Essential's $329. Essential is cheaper from 101.
  • Essential or Professional. Professional becomes cheaper than Essential plus overage at 183 Abby Minutes.
  • Professional or Growth. Growth becomes cheaper only at 462 Abby Minutes. At 400, Professional plus overage costs $1,197.
  • The 1,000-minute rule. If you pass 1,000 Abby Minutes in a billing period on a standard plan, Abby's terms let it move you to a custom Enterprise plan at $2.76 per Abby Minute, sized at 75% of an estimate built from your last three weekdays and most recent weekend.

Abby Connect's monthly cost by call volume and answer mix (our compiled table)

Calls a month Abby, all people Abby, half the minutes with AI Abby, all AI Ruby Smith.ai live PATLive Smith.ai AI
30 $295.60 $221.58 $164 $395 $300 $189 $15

100 $898 $673.75 $493 $1,160 $915 $479 $212.50

Every call is 3 billed minutes. Each cell is the cheapest plan plus published overage for that volume, from each provider's own pages on Nov 2, 2026. Smith.ai bills per call, so call length doesn't change its prices. Taxes and add-ons are excluded.

Grid of Abby Connect's monthly cost at 30, 60 and 100 three-minute calls with people, half AI, or all AI answering, next to Ruby, Smith.ai live, PATLive and Smith.ai AI, using prices checked Nov 2, 2026

Abby Connect vs Ruby and Smith.ai: which costs less for a law firm?

Abby Connect cost less than Ruby in every pattern we priced, even with people on every call. Against Smith.ai's live receptionists, Abby with people answering cost $4.40 to $53.30 less at 30 to 100 three-minute calls. Smith.ai's AI plan cost less than Abby's all-AI option at every volume we checked.

Two billing differences decide most of the gap. Ruby charges $250 for 50 receptionist minutes and rounds each call up to a whole minute, while Abby charges $164 for 50 Abby Minutes and rounds to 30 seconds. Smith.ai bills per call, so if your calls run longer than 3 billed minutes, Smith.ai's live price stays the same while Abby's rises.

We compared Ruby in detail, using Ruby's own help-center overage rates, in our Ruby receptionist alternative price comparison. For Smith.ai's AI and live plans side by side, see our honest look at Smith.ai alternatives.

What are the cheapest Abby Connect alternatives at 60 calls a month?

At 60 three-minute calls a month, Abby Connect cost $591.70 with people answering and $295.60 with AI, using its published overage rates. Among live alternatives, PATLive cost $349 and LEX Reception $450. AI alternatives ran from $105 to $495 a month before setup fees, on prices checked Nov 2, 2026.

When is Abby Connect the better pick?

Abby Connect is the better pick when you want people and AI on one plan and the freedom to change the mix. It suits a firm that wants a person on new-client calls during the day, AI overnight, Spanish on every plan, and Clio Grow or Clio Manage connected during onboarding.

Choose Abby Connect over an alternative if:

  • You want a person on some calls. Abby's AI can warm-transfer a caller to one of its U.S.-based receptionists on the same call. An AI-only service, ours included, transfers to your own team or takes a message.
  • Your callers speak Spanish. English and Spanish answering is included on every Abby plan, for people and for the AI.
  • You run on Clio or Lawmatics. Abby lists Clio Grow, Clio Manage, and Lawmatics on its legal integrations page and says it builds missing integrations during onboarding at no charge.
  • Your calls are short. Abby rounds to the next 30 seconds, so a call that measures 25 seconds, ring time included, bills as 30 seconds, not a full minute.
  • You want to try it first. Every plan starts with a free trial of 14 days or 500 Abby Minutes, whichever comes first.

Before you connect any answering service to your case software, our guide to connecting an AI receptionist to Clio or MyCase lists what to ask about where calls land and what syncs.

How do you cancel or switch from Abby Connect?

To switch from Abby Connect, give written notice early. After your first 30 days, Abby's terms require 30 days' notice, and cancellation takes effect at the end of the billing cycle in which that notice ends. Test the new service during the notice period, then change your call forwarding or port your number.

Timing matters. Say you are past your first 30 days and your Abby billing date is the 15th. Notice sent Nov 2 ends Dec 2, so service ends Dec 14. Notice sent Nov 20 ends Dec 20, which falls in the next cycle, so service runs to Jan 14, one more billing month. Abby's terms say fees aren't prorated.

Timeline of Abby Connect's 30-day cancellation notice with a billing date on the 15th: notice on Nov 2 ends service Dec 14, while notice on Nov 20 ends service Jan 14, one billing month later
Checklist of eight steps to switch from Abby Connect to another answering service, from saving call records to reviewing the first two weeks of calls
  1. Save your call summaries, recordings, and transcripts from the AbbyGO app or my.abby.com portal.
  2. Count your Abby Minutes for the last three months, split between people and AI.
  3. Price that volume on each new provider's own pricing page.
  4. Write down your greeting, intake questions, transfer rules, and booking rules.
  5. Send Abby your cancellation notice in writing, and note the date service ends.
  6. Test the new service on a private line before any real caller reaches it.
  7. Move your calls by changing call forwarding, or by porting the number if Abby hosts it.
  8. Review every call from the first two weeks and fix gaps in the script.

If you only forward your calls to Abby, the number stays with your phone company. A number you ported to Abby stays yours. A number Abby assigned you remains Abby's property, and its terms allow a port away only when your account is in good standing and you have had the number more than 30 days. Ask the new provider to confirm the port date before your Abby service ends.

How does Legal Touch AI compare with Abby Connect?

Legal Touch AI is an AI receptionist only, so it has no human receptionists to hand calls to. It answers on the first ring, asks your screening questions, and sends good callers to you live during office hours, with a text to you first. At 60 calls, Abby's all-AI option cost less than our done-for-you plan.

Our self-setup plan cost less than any Abby mix at 60 calls. Here is when each fits:

  • Choose Abby Connect if some callers must reach a person, you want Spanish on every plan, or you want a Clio connection built during onboarding.
  • Choose Legal Touch AI if you want your greeting, screening questions, and calendar built with you, consults booked on your Google or Outlook calendar, script changes usually within 1 business day, and service that is month to month.

When you don't pick up, it books a consult on your calendar and texts the caller a confirmation. You get a summary, the recording, and the transcript after every call. It never gives legal advice. Spanish and case software sync are quoted separately, so ask on the demo call. Plans run from self-setup to done for you, backed by a 60-day money-back guarantee (minus costs, max $750). See Legal Touch AI plans and pricing for details.

Why we wrote this comparison

We set up Legal Touch AI on our own phone lines first, greeting callers and asking our screening questions, before offering it to small law firms. We wrote this because "alternative" pages often hide where the brand they compare against wins, and firm owners deserve to see that before they choose.

Frequently asked questions

Does Abby Connect have an AI receptionist?

Yes. Abby Connect's AI Receptionist is built in-house and sold on the same plan as its human receptionists. It answers 24/7, screens and transfers calls, takes messages, and books appointments in English or Spanish. Each AI minute uses half an Abby Minute, and the AI can hand a caller to a human receptionist on the same call.

Does Abby Connect work with Clio?

Yes. Abby Connect lists Clio Grow and Clio Manage integrations, plus Lawmatics, on its legal integrations page. Its Clio Grow page says prospective clients land in the Grow pipeline with intake answers attached, and its Clio Manage page says client calls are logged to the matter. Abby says its onboarding team connects Clio for you.

Does Abby Connect have a free trial or a contract?

Abby Connect offers a free trial of 14 days or 500 Abby Minutes, whichever comes first, and its plans are month to month with no setup fee. Its terms also describe a 22-day money-back guarantee for new clients on their first purchase. After the first 30 days, cancelling takes 30 days' notice.

Are Abby Connect's human receptionists available 24/7?

They can be. Abby's pricing page lists 24/7 coverage with no weekend upcharge, and its terms say accounts set up for 24/7 coverage run every day of the year. Standard human answering in the terms is 5 am to 9 pm Pacific on weekdays and 6 am to 6 pm on weekends. The AI answers 24/7.

Can I keep my phone number if I leave Abby Connect?

Usually, yes. If you forward your calls to Abby, the number stays with your phone company and you change the forwarding. A number you ported to Abby stays yours. A number Abby assigned you remains Abby's property, though its terms allow a port away when your account is in good standing and you have had it over 30 days.
