Answering Legal Alternative for Small Law Firms: Features, Terms, and Prices Compared
An Answering Legal alternative is any phone answering service a law firm uses in place of Answering Legal, whether that is another live receptionist service, an AI receptionist, or a mix of people and AI. We read 54 of Answering Legal's own pages, including its terms of service, on Nov 4, 2026, and compared it with 7 other services for firms with 1 to 10 attorneys.

Why it matters: in a secret-shopper study in Clio's 2019 Legal Trends Report, 39% of calls to law firms went to voicemail, and 79% of surveyed consumers said they expected a response within 24 hours (Clio press release, Oct 21, 2019). Answering Legal is a well-known fix for that. We sell a different one. So we show what Answering Legal publishes, what it leaves to the sales call, and when it is the better pick.
What is the best Answering Legal alternative for a small law firm?
The best Answering Legal alternative depends on who you want answering and how you want to buy. For a person on every call with prices you can see first, look at PATLive, Abby Connect, or Ruby. For per-call billing, try Smith.ai. For AI that answers every call and is set up and tuned for you, pick a managed AI service.
Pick by the job you need done, not by brand:
- A person on every call, with published prices. PATLive, Alert Communications, Abby Connect, Ruby, and LEX Reception all list plan prices without a form.
- Another team built for law firms. LEX Reception sells 24/7 legal reception, and Alert Communications says its plans are intended for law firms only.
- Per-call billing instead of minutes. Smith.ai's live and AI plans charge per call, so a long intake call doesn't raise the bill.
- People and AI on one plan. Abby Connect, where a minute with its AI uses half an Abby Minute.
- AI that someone else builds and tunes. Legal Touch AI's done-for-you plans or Smith.ai's Enterprise AI plan.

How much does Answering Legal cost in 2026?
Answering Legal's comparison pages list a starting price of $360 for 100 minutes, checked Nov 4, 2026. Its pricing page shows other plans only after you enter your name, firm, email, and cell phone. Overage is billed per minute at a rate "detailed in your agreement." Plans are month to month with no setup fee.

Answering Legal's help center says pricing is set by the number of minutes, that "every premium feature is included" on every plan, and that you get a detailed quote after a demo or trial. Its free trial page adds that it uses your trial calls "to construct a custom pricing package unique to your firm." Here is what we could and couldn't find on its own pages:
| Pricing item | What Answering Legal's pages say (Nov 4, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Starting price | $360 for 100 minutes, on its comparison pages against Ruby and Abby Connect |
| Larger plans | Shown after a contact form; quoted after a demo or trial |
| Overage | Per minute, at a rate "detailed in your agreement"; calls are never cut off |
| Billing increment | Not stated on the pages we read |
| Setup fee | None on the pricing page; its terms allow $399 to $599 for extensive setup |
| Contract | Month to month, cancel without penalty |
| Other charges in its terms | A $21.50 carrier recovery fund charge; a 1.5% monthly late fee on overdue balances |
Two questions decide most of the bill on any per-minute plan: the overage rate and how each call is rounded. Ask for both in writing before your trial ends.
What does Answering Legal include on every plan?
Answering Legal says every plan includes 24/7 live answering by U.S.-based receptionists who answer only for lawyers, custom intake scripts, Spanish-speaking receptionists, appointment scheduling, call transfers, a mobile app, and connections to legal software such as Clio Grow, MyCase, and Lawmatics. It says it has answered for lawyers since 2013.
Answering Legal is a live legal answering service: trained receptionists answer your forwarded calls with your firm's greeting, sort new callers from existing clients, and take an intake, a message, or a screened transfer. Its pages describe:
- Who answers. "100% U.S.-based bilingual receptionist staff," available 24/7/365, including holidays.
- Spanish. Spanish intake at no extra fee, with messages sent to you in English.
- Transfers. A warm transfer by default: the receptionist calls you, briefs you on who is on the line, and connects the caller only if you say yes.
- Scheduling. Consults booked on Google, Outlook, or Clio calendars, around the clock.
- Software. Direct connections to Clio Grow, PracticePanther, Lawmatics, Smokeball, MyCase, and Lead Docket, plus Zapier.
- Forwarding. All calls, calls on a schedule, or rollover forwarding, where your office phone rings first.
- Extras. A free AI intake chatbot for your website and Legal Video Calls, live interpreters in more than 180 languages, sold in 15-minute increments.
Its help center says most firms can go live the same day they sign up, and that more complex scripts or integrations may take 1 to 2 days.
What should small firms read in Answering Legal's terms?
Read four parts of Answering Legal's terms of service before you sign: the charges outside your plan price, who owns a phone number it assigns you, the six-month plan review, and how cancellation works. The pricing page doesn't mention them, so read them before your trial ends.
What the terms say, in plain English:
- Extra charges. A $21.50 carrier recovery fund charge, $399 to $599 for setup beyond a normal account, and a 1.5% monthly late fee on overdue balances.
- Assigned numbers. "Any telephone number assigned to Customer by Answering Legal shall remain the property of Answering Legal." If you forward your own number instead, it stays with your phone company.
- The six-month plan review. For your first six months, Answering Legal may review your usage and propose a different plan. If it recommends an upgrade, it emails you first and the higher fee is prorated from the change date. After that, your account may be reviewed every six months.
- Cancellation. Send written notice by email or mail. Answering Legal starts the cancellation within two business days, your monthly plan stays active until the next billing cycle, and you still owe any overage.
- Recording. Answering Legal may record calls for quality and training, and the terms make your firm responsible for telling callers and getting any consent the law requires.
- Advice. Its receptionists won't give legal, accounting, tax, or financial advice to your callers.
How does Answering Legal's free trial work?
Answering Legal's free trial lasts 14 days from the day you start forwarding calls, or until you use 400 minutes, whichever comes first. It needs a 15-minute call to set up and no credit card. Its terms allow it to end a trial early, add fees for trials over major holidays, and offers no new trials in late December.

The trial includes the full service: 24/7 answering, intake, Spanish, the app, and software connections. The fine print matters if you plan to test in the next two months:
- Holiday trials. The terms allow a $175 charge for trials that run through major holidays, including Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Christmas.
- December setup fee. For trials starting Dec 5 through Jan 7, Answering Legal may charge a $350 setup fee.
- No December trials. It doesn't offer free trials from Dec 15 through Jan 4.
- Early end. The terms let it end a trial for many reasons, including use of more than 100 minutes of receptionist time.
Its pages don't all agree on the length. One help article describes a 7-day trial, and another a 400-minute trial. Ask for the trial length, end date, and minutes in writing when you book it. If you don't continue, its help center says the service ends with no charge.
What do Answering Legal alternatives cost for 100 minutes a month?
At 100 minutes a month, Answering Legal's $360 starting plan cost more than Abby Connect's $329 and less than Ruby's $395. Alert Communications listed $240 and PATLive $189 for 100 minutes. AI options started at $149 a month. LEX Reception's smallest plan was $425 for 150 minutes, all on prices checked Nov 4, 2026.
Smallest published plan with at least 100 minutes a month (our compiled table)
| Service | Who answers | How it bills | Monthly price | Minutes included | Price per included minute | Setup fee | First 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LEX Reception | People, built for law firms | Per minute | $425 | 150 | $2.83 | $75 | $5,175 |
| Ruby | People | Per minute | $395 | 100 | $3.95 | None listed | $4,740 |
| Answering Legal | People, law firms only | Per minute | $360 | 100 | $3.60 | None, per its pricing page | $4,320 |
| Abby Connect, people | People | Abby Minute | $329 | 100 | $3.29 | None | $3,948 |
| Alert Communications, Tier 1 | People, law firms only | Per minute | $240 | 100 | $2.40 | May apply, per its page | $2,880 |
| PATLive | People | Per minute | $189 | 100 | $1.89 | None listed | $2,268 |
| Abby Connect, AI | AI, with human handoff | Abby Minute | $164 | 100 AI minutes | $1.64 | None | $1,968 |
| Legal Touch AI | AI | Per minute of AI talk time | $149 self-setup, or $495 done for you | See pricing page | Not compared | None, or $995 done for you | $1,788 or $6,935 |
Each row is the provider's smallest published plan that includes at least 100 minutes, from its own page on Nov 4, 2026, with no overage added. Answering Legal's price is the starting price on its comparison pages. First 12 months is 12 months plus any setup fee. Taxes and add-ons are excluded.

Smith.ai bills per call, not per minute. One hundred minutes of 3-minute calls is about 33 calls, which costs $334.50 a month on Smith.ai's 30-call live plan with its published overage, or $150 on its AI Pro plan. For the same math at 30, 60, and 100 calls, see our Smith.ai alternatives comparison with per-call math.
Answering Legal vs Ruby and Abby Connect: how do they differ?
Answering Legal, Ruby, and Abby Connect all offer live receptionists billed by the minute. Answering Legal answers only for law firms and keeps most prices behind a form. Ruby and Abby Connect serve many industries and publish every plan. Abby Connect also sells AI answering on the same plan, which Answering Legal's pages don't describe for phone calls.
| Question | Answering Legal | Ruby | Abby Connect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who answers phone calls | People | People | People, AI, or both |
| Law firms only | Yes | No | No |
| Prices published | Starting price only | Yes | Yes |
| 100-minute plan | $360 | $395 | $329 with people, or $164 with AI |
| Spanish | Included on every plan | Bilingual answering listed as an option | Included on every plan |
| Free trial | 14 days or 400 minutes | Not listed on its pricing page | 14 days or 500 Abby Minutes |
Answering Legal and Ruby figures from each company's own pages on Nov 4, 2026. Abby Connect plans from abby.com/pricing on Nov 4, 2026; trial terms from our Nov 2 check of Abby's site.

We priced Ruby at three volumes, with its help-center overage rates, in our Ruby receptionist alternative price comparison. For Abby Connect's minutes, overage, and cancellation rules, see our Abby Connect alternative guide for small firms.
When is Answering Legal the better pick?
Answering Legal is the better pick when you want a trained person on every call, from a team that answers only for law firms, with Spanish, scheduling, and legal software connections included on every plan. It also suits firms that want to try the full service free before they see a price.
Choose Answering Legal over an alternative if:
- Your callers need a person. Callers in distress, or with matters that are hard to fit into rules, may do better with a trained receptionist than with any AI service, ours included.
- Your callers speak Spanish. Spanish intake is included on every plan, with messages sent to you in English.
- You run on legal software. It lists direct connections to Clio Grow, PracticePanther, Lawmatics, Smokeball, MyCase, and Lead Docket.
- You want to start fast. Its help center says most firms go live the same day.
- You want to test with real calls. The trial covers 14 days or 400 minutes with no credit card, outside the December blackout dates.
How do you switch from Answering Legal?
To switch from Answering Legal, send written notice by email or mail. Its terms say cancellation starts within two business days, and your plan stays active until the next billing cycle, with any overage still owed. Test the new service before that date, then change your call forwarding.

- Save your call messages and intake records from the Answering Legal app or your legal software.
- Count your minutes for the last three months, and note how many calls were new clients.
- Price that volume on each new provider's own pricing page.
- Write down your greeting, intake questions, transfer rules, and booking rules.
- Send Answering Legal your cancellation notice in writing, and note your next billing date.
- Test the new service on a private line before any real caller reaches it.
- Move your calls by changing the forwarding on your own number.
- Review every call from the first two weeks and fix gaps in the script.
If you forward your own number to Answering Legal, nothing has to be ported: you change the forwarding. If you print a number Answering Legal assigned you, its terms say that number remains Answering Legal's property, so ask how it is handled before you leave.
How does Legal Touch AI compare with Answering Legal?
Legal Touch AI is an AI receptionist only, so no person answers your calls. It answers on the first ring, says it is your firm's AI assistant, asks your screening questions, and texts you before it transfers a caller during office hours. Our self-setup plan cost less than Answering Legal's starting plan; our done-for-you plan cost more.

Here is when each fits:
- Choose Answering Legal if every caller must reach a person, you want Spanish and a long list of software connections on every plan, or you want to start the same day.
- Choose Legal Touch AI if you want your greeting, screening questions, and calendar built with you, consults booked on your Google or Outlook calendar, script changes usually within 1 business day, and service that is month to month.
If you don't answer a transfer by the third ring, it goes back to the caller and books a time instead. You get a summary, the recording, and the transcript after every call. It never gives legal advice. A "Spanish and English receptionist" and "case software sync with Clio, MyCase, or PracticePanther" are part of Done for You Plus, and Spanish on our other plans is quoted separately. Plans are backed by a 60-day money-back guarantee (minus costs, max $750). See Legal Touch AI plans and pricing for details.

Why we wrote this comparison
We set up Legal Touch AI on our own phone lines first, greeting callers and asking our screening questions, before offering it to small law firms. We wrote this because "alternative" pages often skip the places where the brand they compare against wins, and firm owners deserve to see those before they choose.
Hear it answer a call. Book a 15-minute Legal Touch AI demo to hear a live call and get a written quote for your call volume.
Frequently asked questions
Does Answering Legal use AI to answer phone calls?
No, not on the pages we read. Answering Legal says calls are answered by trained, U.S.-based legal receptionists, 24/7. Its AI product is a free intake chatbot for your website, which it says will never give legal advice. Its terms list automated attendant and AI voice phone menu systems among its services, so ask if you want those.
Does Answering Legal work with Clio?
Yes. Answering Legal lists a direct Clio Grow integration, along with PracticePanther, Lawmatics, Smokeball, MyCase, Lead Docket, and Zapier. Its help center says intake details such as the caller's name, phone, email, and answers to your questions sync to your software after each call. It can also book consults on a Clio calendar.
Does Answering Legal have Spanish-speaking receptionists?
Yes. Answering Legal says it has Spanish and English receptionists on every plan at no extra fee. Spanish-speaking callers are routed to a bilingual receptionist who runs the same intake in Spanish, and the message is sent to your firm in English. It also sells live interpreter video calls in more than 180 languages.
Does Answering Legal have a contract or a setup fee?
No long-term contract. Answering Legal says its service is month to month with no setup fee and no extra charge for premium features. Its terms do allow $399 to $599 for extensive setup, a $350 setup fee for trials that start from Dec 5 to Jan 7, and a $21.50 carrier recovery fund charge.
Can I keep my phone number if I leave Answering Legal?
Usually, yes. If you forward your own number to Answering Legal, the number stays with your phone company and you simply change the forwarding. A number Answering Legal assigned you is different: its terms say that number remains Answering Legal's property, so ask how it is handled before you print it or leave.
